Ruby-crowned/Golden-crowned Kinglet
Number observed: 50Details
Mixed flock of kinglets and couldn’t assess the ratio - feeding in the birches.
We had walked through the area about 20 minutes prior and it was pretty quiet, but on our way back, there was an incredible frenzy of activity and noise - and it just flowed above our heads.
Four of us observed an amazing, unusually high number of the Regulidae (kinglet) family passing through the forest canopy. The day was cloudy and it was late in the afternoon. We could identify enough individual birds to see there were many more Golden-crowned Kinglets than Ruby-crowned. They were feeding in the birches directly above our heads as we stood in the woods road. The four of us were spread out along 20 yards of the road and could view different portions of the canopy. At one point, Deanna counted 29 birds above her head while Jennifer, looking in a different direction, counted 30. The flock eventually streamed out and we saw birds leaving the roadside while others followed them. We estimated a mixed flock of 80 and have reported the individual number of each species we could count and identify. There were several Black-capped Chickadees mixed in with the flock and, interestingly, they stayed in the area after the kinglet flock moved on. -
