Checklist Comments

Right around 70 deg F, overcast with very light to heavy rains for the first 45 minutes where I just watched from under the visitor center's southern overhang and then up on the back deck (fair number of warblers hopping around the vegetation in view from here). Once the rain stopped, walked the loop around that vegetation island a couple of times w/Donna McAdams. Very calm, no wind at all, and a pretty incredible sunset. Lots of activity along the Raptor Trail, not much going on elsewhere.

Early, personal first-of-fall in Virginia Beach and a new personal early date in the city (9 Oct 2022 was my prior early mark); initially heard giving its sharp, double call note, then seen and photographed along the Raptor Trail just west of the initial grove of cypress trees.

    Details

Utterly gorgeous individual, showing off its buff-colored chest with crisp, neat vertical lines, buffy malar, significantly grayer overall on the bank and neck than SOSP shows. Hopping around near the weather station fence line and feeding in the grass for a few minutes giving incredible views. Personal first-of-fall in Virginia Beach.

Probably a continuing individual, though there's no telling how many might be out here right now after Sat/Sun nights' excellent migration winds. Photographed along the Raptor Trail just west of the cypress grove.
