    Details

mid-sized bird. Appeared a little larger than a jay. Overall gray body with black wings with white wing patches. In flight, bird seemed "stubby" or "stocky". I was able to see this bird perched, from below while flying overhead, and from above as it flew down the valley. First saw the nutcracker on top of the ridge just below the restrooms (parking lot at trail to the lake). Nutcracker then flew into tall tree right behind the restrooms, then flew down across the valley away from the campsites. The Nutcracker did not stay around long. I did stay and look for the bird for about thirty minutes, but no luck. ..I did not expect to see this bird. A very lucky find for me. My goal for the day was a late Greater Pewee or a Williamson's Sapsucker. I found neither, but am very happy with the Nutcracker. This is my first Arizona sighting of this species. I did not expect to find one in Pima County.
