Tiny and active sunbird of northern New Guinea. Male is dark gray-brown above, with an iridescent blue-black throat and black belly; small orange shoulder “spur” sometimes visible. Female is brownish above and yellow below. Inhabits lowland and hill forest and forest edge, where it can be uncommon; not as widespread and abundant as other “Olive-backed-type” sunbirds with which it was formerly grouped. Gives a twittering song that accelerates into a fizzy trill; calls include high “see” notes.
