Identification

POWERED BY MERLIN

Brown cuckoo-dove, endemic to Enggano Island, off Sumatra’s southwest coast. Gingery-brown, with distinctively blotchy, “scaled”-looking chest and upperparts. Unique in its limited range, where it is the only cuckoo-dove. Inhabits forested and wooded areas throughout the island. Like other closely related cuckoo-doves, forages predominantly in the middle and lower levels of forest. Often keeps to dense foliage, where it can be difficult to see; listen for its song, a mellow “doo-doo-dowOOH.”
