Unexpected surprise and new yardbird. This was a very yellow individual, with yellow running all the way up its belly, breast (winding through sort of a smudgy dark patch) and throat. Eyering, heaviest on the back side of the eye. Contrasty wingbars on dark wings. Minimal contrast between green cheek and throat. Orangey bill was smaller than would be seen on an Acadian Flycatcher, while primary projection seemed longer than would be encountered in a Least. Throat coloration/pattern also helps rule out those other two eyeringed Empids. It raised its crown feathers and flicked its wings and tail at me as it perched at eye level in a Bitternut Hickory no more than 15 feet from where I was standing. It sat there for at least 20 seconds.

It would've been an easy photo opportunity had I been carrying a camera. Naturally, I'd walked down to the mailbox without that. I hadn't set out with the intention of doing serious birding. That I even had binoculars slung over my shoulder was a lucky break. I did get some crappy cellphone video after it occurred to me that the bird was close enough for this to be an option. I didn't get it in the original perch, though. In the video, the bird had moved into a cedar and climbed higher up. I ran back to the house to get my camera after this, but the flycatcher was gone by the time I returned. Stills from the cellphone video are also included here.
