Large, stocky gull with a stout bill. Strictly found at coastal sites. Most common gull of California beach parking lots. Adults have much darker gray back than Herring Gull; immatures are similarly brown, but note the thick bill. Frequently hybridizes with Glaucous-winged Gull at the northern edge of its range.
