15-20 finches swirled into a small sweetgum outside my office window. I dashed outside without binoculars and encountered a flock of White-winged Crossbills foraging in the tree. (Crossed bills, bold white wingbars, veet calls and flight calls). The tree was short and the views were prolongued--often at distances of less than 10 feet. Perhaps 1/3 of the flock were adult males (red birds). The birds eventually flew to a white pine, then we lost them but relocated at least two individuals in a grove of white pine, hemlock, and norway spruce. Before the birds left the sweet gum Bert Harris, Ben Schweinhart and Charlotte Chang were able to enjoy the view.
