Large sparrow with black crown, forehead, and nape. Fleshy-pink bill, underparts white with some streaking along breast and flanks.
Wintering at Muskegon SGA Headquarters. Previously frequented the tire pile behind the HQ building (marker A), but due to Turkey shooting today it was found to the south of the HQ building in the woods opposite the brush piles in the plowed field (marker C). I met a number of birders looking for the sparrow earlier in the afternoon, and returned later to find that they found the bird and had all left. After about a half hour of walking slowly through the field, I located a large junco flock feeding in the furrows of a damp gully in the field between the westernmost brush pile and a group of budding green aspen (marker B). After scanning the DEJU flock for a few minutes I obtained a brief look at the Harris's Sparrow. I attempted to take a video of the bird, and lost it in the process. I could not refind it for the next half hour.
Lifebird! No photos or videos obtained.
