Though this species was noted as occurring in the Tampa Bay region in the 1880s, it was Larry Hopkins, Wes Biggs and Dave Goodwin who provided Pinellas with its first documented record when Hopkins photographed a bird at Mullet Key. It stayed to be looked at by other observers the next day, too.
