first-winter bird - passed it off as a Bonaparte's in the bins until I got it in the scope and it turned its head showing a thin pinkish-orange bill with a dark tip. The bird had a dark patch behind the eye, a clean gray mantle but conspicuous dark mottling in the secondary coverts
