Ledge just N. of dock.

1st spring plumage. We were astonished to see a brilliant white gull perched on the wrack on the N. side of this ledge. Bird faced away from us, as we observed it on the Laura B. distance 40-200+ feet from vessel.

Back was brilliantly white, no small black spots on mantle or coverts. Head, dove-like, blackish facial smudge apparent in both left & right side as the bird turned its head; bill slim & greenish but not seen for any extended periods. Legs not apparent. L. argentatus & marinus nearby & this bird was somewhat smaller-but gleaming white on the mantle. Could not - or at least did not - observe presence or absence of black tips to primaries, too difficult to see against wrack. Obs. for 2+ minutes. Could not get the ferry to circle the ledge. Govt. vessel coming into the harbor at this time. Apparently not seen subsequently.
