  3. Number observed: 2
    Breeding Code: F Flyover (Observed)

Comments: Calling loudly from near the Roosevelt Way entrance as I arrived.

  5. Number observed: 2

Comments: Pair. Initially chased off the Grosbeak but later busied themselves grazing in the grass a bit to the east.

Breeding Code: T Territorial Defense (Probable)

  7. Number observed: 2
  8. Number observed: 1

Comments: Displayed briefly and sang intermittently from perches on the north slope.

Breeding Code: C Courtship, Display, or Copulation (Probable)
  9. Number observed: 6

Comments: Saw only one female. Males ranged in color from yellow to red, but most (3) a bright orange. One hovered repeatedly over the tall grasses to grab seeds, a behavior I have not seen before from this species (photo).

  10. Number observed: 1
  11. Number observed: 3

Comments: One singing male apparently on territory.

  12. Number observed: 1

Comments: Continuing; beautiful overall deep blue with broad chestnut wing bars and very large beak. Remained silent (unfortunately). Initially flushed and chased off by Scrub Jays and Finches, but returned to some favored hiding places in the shrubs and adjacent perches. Moderately cooperative - although it kept its distance it eventually came out onto the slope to graze on the tall grasses and feast on seeds.
