Mallard x Northern Pintail (hybrid)

I spotted this bird swimming with a group of Mallards and Pintails, first noted
grayish sides and back, but instead of a diffuse brown horizontal line above
the flanks, this bird had a narrower black line. Next noted the birds breast
was a pale brown, not sharply demarcated from the flanks. Had a weak
white neck ring, that showed the beginning of a vertical white line up the side
of the neck, but only extending for an inch or so. Head was a duller
greenish, showing a brown cast to the green in strong light. Bill was
grayish, and slightly more slender at the base than Mallard. Back did not
show the elongated black and white fringed tertials of male Pintail, instead
mostly like a Mallard, except that it had a single narrow long uppertail
covert, instead of the recurved coverts of Mallard. When it flapped, I could
see that the speculum was a greenish iridescence, bordered by black and
white stripes, lacking the tawny stripe of Pintail. Similar to Mallard in body
size, but head and neck appeared more slender. Did not see leg color.
