Observations

  1. Number observed: 2

Comments: Inadvertently spooked wood duck pair off of tree branch along creek trail. On the way back, they had returned and flew off again as I walked by. Potential nesting spot?

Breeding Code: P Pair in Suitable Habitat (Probable)

Comments: Amazing morning encounter with a barred owl - While walking along Pines trail on way back from Fern Glen, I saw a large raptor glide high in the tree tops out of the corner of my eye. I lost sight of it (assuming it was likely an owl, as I'd seen one here before), and it landed on a snag approximately 20 yards from me and at eye level. Great looks at close distance as it looked right back. Unfortunately my phone died at this point and I didn't get any (poor) pictures. As I carried on, owl was relatively un-phased and flew up into white pine watching me below.

  19. Number observed: 1

Comments: Fern Glen. Singing its little heart out! At first I didn't recognize the call and for the life of me couldn't find the bird. I search for approximately 10 minutes and finally found him perched on a log, continuing to sing. My first time seeing here, but one (or more) was reported here last spring. Beautiful, little bird of the coniferous (here hemlock) forest.
