  4. Number observed: 1
  5. Number observed: 2

Comments: Pair in the woods near the leaning pagoda. Quite tame.

  6. Number observed: 1
  7. Number observed: 3
  8. Number observed: 1
  9. Number observed: 40

Comments: Conservative estimate of numbers. These birds were very abundant, especially in the dense woods beyond the Fencing Stone at the top of the hill. They came readily and in large numbers to pishing. They were far more abundant than the other three tit species present combined.

  10. Number observed: 8
  11. Number observed: 3

Comments: One in the woods near the Fencing Stone on the hilltop and at least two more along the perimeter road at the base of the hill between the east and west gates. Walking the entire length of this road and exploring the garden area just inside the east gate was exceptionally rewarding.

  12. Number observed: 2
  13. Number observed: 1

Comments: In garden area with flowering magnolias just inside east gate. In conjunction with the flock I found last week at Dianshanhu Lake Scenic Area even further west, it seems possible that this species may invade far western Shanghai's forested areas from further west and south in the spring, when certain trees are in flower.

  14. Number observed: 60
  15. Number observed: 10

Comments: Two different flocks, both on the eastern side of the mountain. One flock of 4 or 5 birds feeding in brushy area near top of hill, and another similar sized flock feeding on flowering magnolias in garden area near east gate of park. Also present in that garden area were 1 collared finchbill and one orange-bellied leafbird!

  24. Number observed: 5
  25. Number observed: 1

Comments: Full adult male seen very well in bright sunlight. Bright blue, green, and orange coloration all visible. Feeding with a flock of bulbul species in a garden area with flowering magnolias near east gate of park. No question about its identity, and it was in the company of two other species seldom seen in Shanghai, chestnut bulbul and collared finchbill.
