Cool but not cold morning -- 48 to 58 degrees -- and overcast. Not many birds, but the highlight of the day turned out to be Clark's Nutcracker, four birds for certain and possibly five. The lake was practically deserted, with only a handful of buffleheads, which out numbered the coots. Los Rasalies Pond equally deserted, with only three species (4 birds) present, and Little Laguna Lake completely dry -- not a creature was stirring, not even a titmouse. One saving grace -- did not see a single Yellow-rumped Warbler or White-crowned Sparrow.

Comments: Continuing rarities. Four birds for certain, and possibly five, foraging in the pines along the trail east of the lake. One bird fed off of a pine cone, while another chipped off bark from branches and appeared to be eating insect larvae. The other two (or three) flitted between the tree and the ground, one quite interested in a cone, but seeming perplexed as to how to attack it. No wonder pine nuts are so expensive. I have it on good authority that these nutcrackers only work if paid above minimum wage. Photos.
