Comments: Nifty!! this sapsucker was feeding in the chokecherry tree immediately (maybe 6 feet from us?) along the walking path on lakeward side of US 93 where the road and path are narrowest E of the boat launch and across the highway a few meters E from the entrance to the Somers Bay Log Cabin Lodging. The bird flew from the cherries to then land momentarily on a dead larch not 25 feet from us. The white longitudinal band on the wings was obvious, the size almost as big as a hairy woodpecker, and the crown brilliant red. We first thought yellow-bellied sapsucker, but then we noted the red patch on the back of the head like on a male hairy or downy woodpecker. we did not have any good ventral view of this bird. no images as the bird departed after its brief perch on the dead larch. not seen again.
