duck sp.

These ducks were in. V formation over the lake, and I wasn’t able to identify them on the wing.

This was a juvenile sanderling with a “spangled” back. It had a paler face and head than a semipalmated sandpiper. It had a short, straight bill and a white belly with black legs. After studying the peeps, there is no doubt in my mind that this bird fits the juvenile sanderling as shown in Sibley for July through November. It was poking through a mound of peat that had washed up along the Lake Erie beach. It was not, however, doing the “clockwork toy” dance so typical of sanderlings.
