Comments: Very unexpected! I had a clear view of this bird for close to a minute and it was unmistakably an American dipper. It was completely gray, robin-sized, and with short stumpy tail feathers. Found along an ephemeral stream that currently has high flow following heavy rains earlier in the week. I only had my phone for photos (they will be posted) but they provide a clear view of the dipper's body shape and color. Video also available (upon request) that shows characteristic bobbing up and down of dippers.
