Western x Glaucous-winged Gull (hybrid)

Small shearwater, flying in the midst of a few large ensembles of feeding-frenzy gulls/pelicans/cormorants/murres. Thin shearwater bill made the separation from Common Murre necessary. Stayed close to water, banking a few times to show the underwing pattern - white outlined by black, with one black chevron coming across the wing edges in a diagonal. Dark above; lighter below. When banking, it gave what I call the "flash-card pattern," as if flipping from black above to bright white below. I must admit that I did not check to see if this was a Manx Shearwater. The number of Black-vented Shearwaters over the past few weeks in Monterey Bay, where they have been reported, and the fact that I've never seen a Manx Shearwater from land (or, for that matter, in California), has left me not really expecting them. My bad, but I would think that the extent of the white on the underside of the bird, if it had been a Manx, would have grabbed my attention. The white itself was too bright for a Sooty or Short-tailed. Proximity to shore also good for a BVSH - just past the breakers. Had the bird in sight, in my scope, for about six seconds.
