Did 7 random 5 minute counts, where Short-tailed Shearwaters were counted by groups of 10 flying south, using a clicker. Those were: 4:27 - 4:32 -- 290, 4:50 - 4:55 -- 360, 5:10 - 5:15 -- 1190, 5:27 - 5:33 -- 640, 5:42 - 5:47 -- 2010, 6:00 - 6:05 -- 1020, 6:22 - 6:27 -- 630. Providing an average of ~ 877 per 5 minutes, equating to ~ 35085 over the 2 hour observation period. Ultimately, quite conservative as I predominantly counted the closest line of birds, neglecting some of those further out.
