Comments: Wow! Good views of this rare sparrow, Great find by Jason Horn!

This sparrow was somewhat smaller than Song/Swamp. In flight it was surprisingly pale compared to the other sparrows present. When perched it showed a orangey/buff supercilium bordered above by black lateral crown stripes. There was a narrow black stripe above the gray auricular patch, and orangey/buff strip below the auricular patch. The central crown strip was white.. Its back and maybe its wings were a combination of boldly marked black and buff streaks, with two longitudinal pale buff stripes. The breast was much paler than the buff face markings.Belly was white. It had bold dark streaks on sides of upper breast and flanks.

The bird would pop up and sit nicely for up to 15 seconds at a time, after which it would dive back down into vegetation. Interestingly, when flushed it was often very uncooperative. It showed best when observers stood quietly and waited.

  20. Number observed: 3

Comments: At least. J. Horn said he had 8 or 9!

Beautiful sparrows, mostly right next to the water's edge. All birds showed orange faces & orange breasts with fine defused streaking with sharp break with white belly. Gray nape. Longitudinal white stripes on back. Poor photos of one individual by Paul..
