Kayaking entirely around the island counting all birds we could see, had a very skinny Kodiak brown bear eating sedge on the beach, bear has probably been on the island since Thursday when we saw him from shore.

  1. Number observed: 1

Comments: Lone hen loafing on shore with Common Eider hens (and 1 King Eider hen). The Common Eiders flew off as we approached but this hen ran across the point and swam away, potentially flightless, perhaps a winter bird stranded in Kodiak due to injury?

  2. Number observed: 1

Comments: Did not get a great photo but based on smaller size, head and bill shape we did have one KIEI hen in among the COEI hens.

  3. Number observed: 50

Comments: Saw 2 hens with broods - ten pretty young ducklings in total, all appeared to be under 1 week old.

Breeding Code: FY Feeding Young (Confirmed)
  4. Number observed: 20

Comments: Including 13 small ducklings about 1 week old.
