Snowy Egret

Two in Long Pond; two by pump house; all snowys were adults with plumes and displayed their medium-small size, thin black bills and black legs with yellow feet. A third bird flew to a tree near the the snowies at the pump house. He appeared slightly larger than the snowies, had grayish-greenish legs with no discernible darker edge on the front of the legs, a rounded head, loral skin with a yellowish cast, and a black-tipped blue-gray bill. Although the three birds took flight and circled the air for a bit, the pair of snowies departed while the third bird landed on a bare tree by the pump house. That bird was photographed for a closer inspection to determine whether it was a hatch year little blue heron or a juvenile snowy egret. Magnification showed a slight contrast in the forelegs, yellowish feet lacking the grayish-greenish cast of the legs and primary tips that revealed no dark pigmentation. Consequently, our hopes were dashed and I am now adding another snowy egret to my original list. However, the research into heron books and other reference materials, despite sometimes contradictory information, was well worth it.
