We walked the birding trail through the mesquite bosque and scoped the lake from the overlook. Sunny and hot with stagnant air, no breeze. Southwest Wings Birding & Nature Festival field trip.

Black-capped Gnatcatcher

Pair seen near the “flycatcher” bench on the birding trail, in the large open grassy area at the edge of mesquite bosque. Male was already in non-breeding plumage, lacking black cap. We noted long, graduated white undertail and strident mewing call notes.
