I walked along the Old Stump Road this morning. My major goal was to check the American Three-toed Woodpecker nest. I drove there and then walked to the entrance to the Jimmy's Fork Trail.

Ruffed Grouse

I surprised a female with chicks. She was on one side of the road. They were on the other. She showed herself twice and kept calling to her little ones, but most of the time she hid from me. Oddly, another adult Ruffed Grouse showed itself at the same time. Perhaps they were in the same area because of a food source. I never saw the chicks, but heard them. This species is a permanent resident in the mountains here. I have take photos of them before, seen them with chicks, and heard them drumming.

This is a photo I took today. I heard this bird calling and saw it sitting on this branch, but as soon as I got my camera up, it turned and flew away. There were two grouse, and I think both had chicks, but I couldn't be sure.

This Ruffed Grouse was at about 9,000 feet in mid May in 2015. I am posting it here to show that this species does occur here.

American Three-toed Woodpecker

I checked the nest cavity of this bird. I have been trying to get to it as often as I could. The young had fledged, but the family was still in the area. During my observations I saw both the male and the female entering the nest with food.
