While scanning the eastern shore of Lake Hammonasset for shorebirds, a shorebird was seen just off the shore flying west across the lake in a strong direct flight not more than 10 feet above the water. It was observed for the time it took to cross the lake, a distance of about 100 yards, until it landed on the west shore and could not be seen any longer. During the entire flight, a white rump was obvious. Although much less obvious, the bird also had a pale wing stripe. A photo of a white-rumped sandpiper on the Cornell "All About Birds" website closely matched what I saw.
