Willet

These poor birds were spending all their time chasing Fish Crows and Great Black-backed Gulls from the small area of marsh at the north end of the island. Hard to imagine that their young could avoid being predated.

Breeding Code
A Agitated Behavior (Probable)

Great Black-backed Gull

Numerous fledglings on the rocks at the edge of the island.
Observed one adult grab and then devour a fledgling Glossy Ibis. Difficult to watch. It is remarkable that these two species can coexist and breed on the same island.

Tricolored Heron

Observed flying away from the island. An adult. Uncertain breeding status. Breeding is possible, including with a Little Blue Heron, given the presence of a hybrid of these two species at nearby Hammonasset Beach SP the past few years. ID is definite: seen well. A slender heron, about the size of a LBHE, with dark upperparts and chest, white belly.
