Medium to large tern, smaller than Caspian Tern which it was near when first seen. Clean white underneath, very pale gray above. Full black cap. Limited dark on upper and lower surface of outer primaries. Slightly forked tail. Relatively stout all black bill. Fed by swooping low and plucking food items from the water's surface.
