Possible. I played a couple volleys of their song before calling it quits at a location they were present in 2007. About 15 minutes later I heard 4 call notes that sounded like an Elf Owl. Not their staccato song, but the single yelps. After the initial calls a pair of chats went nuts and chased whatever made the calls off. I left my recorder on for a few minutes but the bird never called again.

The area is just across the creek about 1/4 mile west then south into the grove.
