Red-breasted Merganser

Obvious influx of late northbound birds.

1
American Oystercatcher
1
Ruddy Turnstone

Roosting on the little finger of rocks just east of the jetty.

1
Sanderling

*County bird.* While this species is expected along the coast, N of South Amboy it's a hard to get migrant, with the window of mid-May to early June (Horseshoe Crab spawning) probably the best. Seen well in scope - a single bird flew out of Caven Cove towards the river. Perhaps it was feeding on the backside of the jetty?

1
Willet

I suspect breeding at this point.

5
Black Skimmer
2
Red-throated Loon

Continuing.

4
Common Loon

Three moderately high E-W, one in cove.

9
Great Blue Heron

One foraging, group of 3 and group of 5 high.

2
Great Egret
3
Yellow-crowned Night-Heron
Age & Sex

1
Merlin

Perched top of a snag along Freedom Way.

1
Saltmarsh Sparrow

Expected in fall. My first spring migrant, although with a targeted effort this species would no doubt prove regular, during the last third of May . In the Mugwort perimeter of the westernmost peninsula on the S end.
