A first-cycle bird spotted in a flock of Bonaparte's Gulls at a moderate distance. Similar in proportions to the Bonies, but immediately stood out as being much darker overall dorsally and appeared slightly smaller at times. Upper surface of wing mostly dark, with no white present in outer primaries. Appeared much darker than first-cycle Bonaparte's Gulls in similar conditions (of which there were a few today).

Flew past tip not far from shore. A loon with proportions intermediate between Common and Red-throated. Head was gray with pale nape, gradually blending to black on throat. Lacked white neck band of Common Loon. Large bold white patches contrasted with black mantle. No white incursion upward from flanks was noted.
