Violet-crowned Hummingbird

Extreme rarity. Seen at road’s end near Hot Springs trailhead. Seen well at close range by both observers. Two hummingbirds were feeding on yellow tubular flowers near trailhead. No clear looks until one landed on smal tree branch, in good light about 8 feet away. It stayed put for 2-3 minutes allowing a careful study. It was a large hummingbird with a slightly decurved, bi -colored bill, reddish most of the length but blackish nearer the tip. The bird’s underside was entirely white and unmarked all the way including the chin. The back was drab greenish brown, contrasting with the darker blue-violet crown. The tail appeared to be unmarked. Other hummers with reddish bills (female Broad-billed and White-eared) were eliminated by breast color and facial markings. We have prior experience with these species in Arizona. Sadly no photos. Hope other biders will re-find it.
