Thought it was a great egret at first, but bulkier/generally less elongated, with a shorter bill and legs, and light orange patch visible on the breast/base of folded neck. Flying south. Unfortunately too brief to obtain photos.

Flew overhead, showing white wing patches and a long tail. Landed in a bare tree by the beach where we were both able to get extended looks at it. Grey overall, somewhat long bill, long tail, white patches on wings. Both of us are very familiar with this species.
