Bonaparte's Gull

Small gulls, sitting/swimming on water at dusk. Black ellipse behind eye, dark smudge behind and higher than eye. Apparently 1st winter birds, as tail tip black. Black primaries held high over tail on swimming birds. Thin bill. Only other gulls with black mark behind eye would be even more extraordinary here. Viewed through scope at ~200-300m. I see there was a photo of 1 individual taken 3 days earlier, which exactly matches the 2 birds I observed.
