Common x Hoary Redpoll (hybrid)

Clearly not the lingering Arctic Redpoll, flank streaking too diffuse, limited extent of white in rump, lacked buff tones to face and throat areas, and has two ages of rectrices - the right half being regrowing adult shape, the left being the pointed juvenile feathers. The Redpoll flock was feeding well out in the set aside and only occasionally coming into the blackthorns. Also a very bright, sunny day so viewing wasn't the best with much contrast making it difficult to get onto the right bird.

Garbage light, looked good for exilipes in the field but note the dark shaft streak on an undertail-covert - and the extent of white in the rump was less than convincing.

Immature

Growing right half of tail, feathers clearly less pointed than those on left, so first winter bird

Immature
