A first Park record was this bird on the 3rd Tee pond on the California City Golf Course. The bird had much whitish compared to the more expected Eared Grebe. The entire neck was whitish as was a large area of the cheek. Flanks were also whitish. The bird was a very active diver and while at the surface it appeared rump-less owing to its hind-end profile sloping into the water without the impression of a tail ruff. The bill was markedly thicker and longer than the typical eared grebe, but less robust than the pied-billed grebe nearby, which was quite similar in overall size.
