American Pipit

First heard in flight. They all landed in the ball field with the Canada and cackling geese at the parade ground ball field but they picked up and flew a circuit around and landed again right in front of us and then suddenly a merlin appeared-- they took off and one of them got picked right out of the air!!!

The birds were small passerines flying in a cohesive flock with lilting chirps and undulating flight, circling around the ball field and then landing. Funny bobbing walk like wagtails. The birds were darker above and lighter below, drab and brownish, lacking the strong black chest bar of horned lark. When flushed by merlin many gave the call described as "contact call" on All About Birds. Counted flock while in flight.
