Comments: We heard a Virginia Rail sound its grunt sequence three times.

  5. Number observed: 13

Comments: We saw one Sora well and kept count of twelve more that called as we circled the wetland.

Comments: We saw a pair of Common Gallinules, which swam into the reeds, and were later able to photograph an additional individual.

  12. Number observed: 6000

Comments: Just after 11:00, while completing the loop around the wetland, we began to notice a large influx of Broad-winged Hawks flying overhead on a southerly bearing (we had seen one previously). As the BWHA's streamed over us, in a ribbon that often filled our scopes, we continually revised our estimate upwards. The overhead ribbon of BWHA's lasted for more than ten minutes, and the birds did not pass out of view for more than twenty minutes. Finally, we agreed upon an estimate of 6,000 birds. We would stress that this is a conservative estimate, and that there were likely more than this. We feel very privileged to have seen this awesome natural spectacle.

Comments: Through our scopes, both of us independently identified a Swainson's Hawk flying within the massive ribbon of Broad-winged Hawks. We saw these birds some minutes apart and so believe that there were probably two different individuals. We distinguished the Swainson's Hawk(s) from Broad-winged Hawks by observing longer wings, pointed wing-tips, and all-black flight feathers contrasting against light bodies and wing-linings. Based on these field marks, we believe the bird(s) were unmistakable and are confident in our IDs.
