Perching adult plus another goshawk calling unseen. The call attracted my attention. I looked up and saw the female perching on a thick bough. Crested Goshawk in inner-city Zhongshan Park is a welcome event, but not unexpected. I've had my eye out for these birds for a year, ever since Wang Jinrong showed me his excellent shots of Crested Goshawk taken at Zhongshan. Trees in the venerable old park are excellent--some of the best in the city. Indeed, the park, more than a century old, has many of the characteristics of an old-growth secondary forest. One tree, the famous plane tree at the western edge of the park, is 140 yrs. old and very tall. Not surprisingly, this giant attracted the female goshawk, which flew into its leafy crown and disappeared.
