Male. Stocky duck with all black plumage and an obvious yellow knob at the base of the bill. I have seen Surf Scoter 11 times in Hayward Marsh, all but twice I only saw 1. 9 records were in May, June, or July. I also have Black Scoter records from nearby in the bay from this time period.

Male. Remember that in phalaropes the male is the dull one. Stocky phalarope.
Bill yellowish with a blackish tip. Red was not as bright than a female would be. Cheek patch not as white or well defined as female. It was in the same pond as the Least Tern nest island. Didn't appear to be the bird that Mark photographed.
