Visual. Watched for 15 minutes hunting along roads within our study site. Yellow eyes, long slender body consisting of browns, blacks, and some white. Long black ear rifts and overall body shape gave away the bird's ID. Behavior was typically of a medium sized owl hunting. Perch hunting, mantling prey (nothing caught). Photos were taken through binoculars (with an iPhone) and confirmed with the rest of my colleagues.
