Comments: Likely a Prairie (richardsonii). However without a photo, I was asked by a moderator to back off that call. I located it on a mudflat of the Somass estuary at low tide while looking for shorebirds. Over all pale brown appearance. Likely an adult female. Distance was 150-200 m. Put my scope on it. What gave it away wast that it was standing on the mud and walking around on it. I've never seen a Merlin do that, ever. So I figure it is used to spending time on the ground like the prairies. Judging from the treeline maps of Alaska, the Taiga (columbarius) inhabits the boreal forest portion of the state and therefor would be less likely to be foraging on the ground.
