Jeff Cherry, Jim Eckler, Lynn Sheldon checked all active nests and nest searched in the control plot.

Temp: 55 F to 65 F
Clouds: Overcast most of the day

These data were collected while I was the field leader for a study on the effects of spruce-budworm pesticide on bird reproduction (Hynson, J.R., Cherry, J., Eckler, J., Sheldon, L., Adamus, P.R. 1982. A Search for the Possible Effects of Orthene on Bird Reproduction. State of Maine, Department of Conservation, Bureau of Forestry). The field work consisted of finding and checking nests in two plots near Baker Lake in northern Somerset County, Maine, the control plot T8 R18 and the spray plot T8 R16. We also recorded data for the Maine breeding bird atlas project (Atlas of Breeding Birds in Maine 1978-1983) within the two study plots and in a few of the surrounding atlas blocks. My daily notes are presented here and in the following checklists.

Comments in quotation marks are exact quotations from my notes. Comments not in quotation marks are my thoughts at the time the checklist was submitted.

Abundance codes: UC - Uncommon, a few birds seen or heard (1-6), FC - Fairly common, more than a few birds seen or heard, but not ubiquitous (7-20), C - Common, ubiquitous, more than 20 birds seen or heard.

S stands for singing

"singing" also seen, we spent about an hour in the vicinity, but only saw the one bird. The bird was in an open stand of young spruce/fir. At the time of this study, Fox Sparrow had not been confirmed as breeding in Maine. We checked this bird several times in the following days to try and confirm breeding.
