Cindy Trussell and I drive out the road, ostensibly to check breeding Bird Survey route markers for both surveys. Drive from town out to north end of Kodiak BBS route near Anton Larsen Bay, then drive out to end of other route near Chiniak. From there drive to Narrow Cape. Mainly this was birding.

Comments: On the mudflats by the pipe at Kalsin Pond. Spent much of its time in shallow water chasing and catching sticklebacks. I watched it get two sticklebacks. About the size and shape of a Greater Yellowlegs. Bill slightly upturned and dark. Crown and nape very finely streaked over very pale background color. Unmarked face is pale gray, and contrasts with the slightly darker crown and nape. No eyeline or supercilium, but when bird faces you, distinct white lores are apparent. Background color of entire underparts white. Breast center and sides are very finely and sparsely marked with discontinuous short streaks. Belly, flanks and undertail coverts unmarked white. Legs and feet greenish-yellow. Upperparts gray-brown overall. Scapulars: some are brown while others have huge black centers and are largely black. The primaries in the folded wing appear blackish.Uppertail is finely barred. Uppertail coverts, rump, and back are white. When bird flies, white back is striking. First Kodiak Archipelago record.
