Mallard Pond very crowded, probably due to high winds. Canvasbacks identified by very light-colored body and dark red head in male and long, smooth bills that continue line of forehead in both sexes. Counted canvasback using a spotting scope.

Surveyed all ponds at Chester Wetlands. Encountered groups of RNDU on five of the ponds. Double counting unlikely as I did not flush any of the groups.

Small groups of COGO on four of the nine ponds that were surveyed. Did not flush birds.

1
Bufflehead x Common Goldeneye (hybrid)

Diving duck about the size and shape of a COGO (one of which was nearby for comparison) Basically a white duck with a black stripe running along the top of the body from bill to tail. I could see a green sheen on the black part of the head and a hint of a shaggy crest. When it flew, I could see two white patches on each of the black wings, one bigger than the other. I took notes and drew a sketch in the field. Once I returned home I looked up COGO hybrids and found photos of Bufflehead x Common Goldeneye hybrids that matched my bird.

Grebe with tiny, sharp bill. Tail-end of bird about perpendicular to water. Little crest. Two on Singleton, one on Mallard.
