Observations

  1. Number observed: 17
  2. Number observed: 300
  3. Number observed: 2

Comments: Surprisingly the first I've had here, despite them being common at locations just a few miles away. This pair was swimming with American Black Ducks in the bay.

  4. Number observed: 7
  5. Number observed: 18
  6. Number observed: 53
  7. Number observed: 3

Comments: Finally a few Lesser Scaup mixed in with the scaup flock.

  8. Number observed: 1

Comments: Very uncommon in upper Narragansett Bay. I first saw this bird at the bridge and watched it swim halfway to the pier where it went to the beach and rested for a few minutes. I intercepted its path later while trying to photograph the Purple Sandpipers to the west of the pier. It swam slowly and calmly right past me as I crouched on the low tidal rocks. This individual was possibly seen yesterday on the Seekonk River in Providence by Michael Morin and is making its way back out of the bay (See this checklist). With a dumpy posture, wings held slightly lowered the bird might be injured (possibly missing tail/undertail feathers) and could be incapable of flight, although it is alert and apparently swimming well and covering some good mileage... It could very well just be gathering strength after the recent storms and high winds.

  11. Number observed: 8
  12. Number observed: 12
  13. Number observed: 8
  14. Number observed: 10
  15. Number observed: 3

Comments: One of these seemed to have a preference for swimming... and swam a distance of at least twelve feet between two rocks. Riding very low in the water as it paddled, it's a species clearly not built for such activities.
