Scoping isolated larid roosts around the Point I came upon this large, 2nd winter gull that immediately impressed as something "different." The (1) very bright pale eye, (2) combined with a deep slaty back, (3) dark brown primaries, (4) washed out pale secondary flight feathers, (5) faintly mottled streaking around the neck and head, all suggested Slaty-backed Gull. I watched the bird for 4-5 minutes before a lady walking her miniature daschund disturbed the flock. The SBGU landed briefly, alone on a rock just to the south, then continued south toward the "South Gull Roost." I could not refind the bird, there however.
