Observations

  1. duck sp.

    Number observed: 4

Comments: Fly-overs in dim light. The first two likely were American Black Ducks.

  2. Number observed: 3
  3. Number observed: 1

Comments: The bird flew from the west/direction of the landfill and landed not far from Russ's feet. It was flushed a short time later. A second sighting of an American Woodcock in flight may have involved the same bird.

  4. Number observed: 1
  5. Asio sp.

    Number observed: 1

Comments: Observed initially and very briefly at 4:42 P.M. as the bird flew from east to west along the distant horizon (north of the access road and fence) and landed presumably in the "red tree". The same bird may have been observed a second time ca. 5:05 P.M. as it flew high from the landfill area toward the beach. Both observations were made under dim light, and there was no possibility for distinguishing features of the owl. Probably Short-eared Owl, and possibly Long-eared Owl.
Note on further reflection and with subsequent trips: probably Long-eared Owl, and possibly Short-eared Owl.

  6. Number observed: 20

Comments: All seen initially on the ground in the parking lot, later perched in trees.

  7. Number observed: 1

    Comments: Heard.

  8. Number observed: 1
  9. Number observed: 1
